Amsterdam May 2026 Guide: Festivals, Free Events and Things To Do

May in Amsterdam is when the city properly comes into its own. The days are longer, the weather improves, and life moves outdoors. Terraces fill up, parks get busy, and every week brings new festivals, markets and cultural events.

For Wittenborg students, it is one of the best months to explore the city, meet people and experience Amsterdam beyond lectures and campus life.

Here is your guide to what is happening in Amsterdam in May 2026.

Liberation Day | 5 May

Liberation Day is one of the biggest national celebrations in the Netherlands. Amsterdam turns into one large open-air festival, with free events taking place across the city.

From Westergas and Lofi to the Museum Quarter and Pllek, you will find live music, food stalls and a lively atmosphere all day. It is one of the most important cultural days in the Dutch calendar and a great way to experience the city at its most social.

Tapt Festival | 8 to 9 May

Held in Flevopark, Tapt is a relaxed outdoor festival with food trucks, drinks, games and music.

It is popular with students and young professionals and has a very easygoing atmosphere, making it perfect for a casual day out.

Rollende Keukens | 13 to 17 May

Westerpark transforms into a huge food festival with dozens of food trucks, live cooking and live music.

Entry is free, and it is one of the best places in Amsterdam to spend a sunny afternoon with friends.

Vondelpark Open Air Theatre | Throughout May

As temperatures rise, Vondelpark becomes a cultural hotspot with free open air performances including music, dance and theatre.

It is one of the most relaxed ways to enjoy live culture in the city.

Fête du Champagne | 21 to 25 May

A wine and champagne festival in Rembrandtpark offering over 100 champagnes and wines, alongside food and music.

It has a relaxed, social atmosphere and is ideal for long afternoons outdoors.

Dance Festivals Across the Region | Throughout May

May is a major month for electronic music in and around Amsterdam, with festivals like Music On, Awakenings and Lente Kabinet attracting international DJs and large crowds.

It is a key part of the city’s festival season.

Markets and Local Finds | Throughout May

Amsterdam’s markets are in full swing in May. From vintage shopping at IJhallen to creative stalls at Maker Market and Sunday Market, there is plenty to explore across the city.

They are also a great way to discover different neighbourhoods.
