Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences features prominently in the second edition of the book 'Made in Apeldoorn'. 

With this edition, readers can discover over two hundred businesses from Apeldoorn, ranging from small enterprises to large corporations, from startups to multinational entities.

The newly launched edition of 'Made in Apeldoorn' came to fruition through the collaborative efforts of the Business Circle Apeldoorn (Bedrijvenkring Apeldoorn - BKA) and the municipality of Apeldoorn.

To mark the release of the second edition, the BKA hosted a special event, where its Chairman, Priscilla Trip, presented the book to Alderman Marco Wenzkowski on 27 September at Krommenhoek in Stadhoudersmolenweg.

On 13 September, the municipality of Apeldoorn made significant progress in charting its economic course during the 'Werkatelier Economische Koers 2040'. Maggie Feng, CEO of Wittenborg, joined over sixty stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, employers, businesses, educational institutions and community organisations, in actively shaping the city's trajectory.

Themes of 'green' and 'innovation'

Their vision includes creating an environment with a thriving business climate, attracting companies and institutions and providing abundant opportunities for learning and growth.

The workshop was divided into two sessions, featuring insightful talks by speakers Ruben Nieuwenhuis, Ruben Zondervan and Cees-Jan Pen. Topics ranged from start-ups, technology and innovative collaboration concepts to the transition towards a new energy-based economy. These sessions paved the way for in-depth discussions on the themes of 'green' and 'innovation'.

In the green economy context, participants emphasised sustainability and future-proof innovations. They called for visible demonstrations of Apeldoorn's commitment to environmentally friendly practices within its business locations.

In a thought-provoking online lecture held on 27 September, Fons Trompenaars, Dutch organisation theorist and the founder/director of the intercultural management consultancy Trompenaars Hampden-Turner, treated Wittenborg students to insights into the complicated world of cross-cultural business dynamics. Trompenaars, known worldwide as a motivational speaker, consultant, trainer and author of several acclaimed books on culture and business, shared his expertise on this topic. 

After an introduction by Dr Joop Remme, Trompenaars started the lecture, "A Cross-Cultural Dialogue - Reconciliation Process in Business", by addressing the different cultural approaches to running businesses and the nature of shared cultures. He explored the difference between working for companies from all over the world and highlighted the profound influence of culture on our lives, values and norms.

On 24 September, Wittenborg's Admissions Managers, Mykhailo Huba and Eunice Cheung, took part in Gelre Regio Partners' first SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Action Days in Apeldoorn to explore the United Nations' 17 SDGs, with focus on a range of questions, including: 'The climate is changing, why aren't we?'

The event, hosted at Stichting de Kap, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and collaborate on the implementation of these 17 goals.

Simon Boon, Social Entrepreneur and the driving force behind Gelre Regio Partners and SDG Action Days Apeldoorn, emphasised the importance of taking action and citizen participation in the transition from a linear to a circular economy.For Gelre Regio Partners, preventing further global warming and adapting to climate change represents the greatest collective challenge for the international community.

Since 5 September, former Apeldoorn alderman Jeroen Joon has been acting mayor of Harderwijk, a city with a population of 50,000 located approximately 30 km from Apeldoorn, also in the province of Gelderland.

Joon was appointed by the King's Commissioner in Gelderland, John Berends, following the departure of former mayor Harm-Jan van Schaik, who stepped down in order to transition to a position in elderly care. The former Apeldoorn alderman will serve as acting mayor for one year, after which period the municipality can decide to keep him in this position or choose another mayor.

With nearly 20 years of experience in public administration, Joon started his political career as a council member in the municipality of Overbetuwe. Subsequently, he served as alderman in the municipalities of Cuijk, Grave and Apeldoorn – having stayed for five years in the latter.

WUAS understands that the journey through higher education can present numerous challenges and difficulties beyond academic study. To address these issues, the school has introduced two crucial support staff: the Student Counsellor and the Student Confidential Advisor.

The first session was delivered by the school’s CEO Maggie Feng on 13 September to 55 bachelor’s students from the International Business Administration (IBA) and Hospitality Business Administration (HBA) programmes. Dr Ton Borchert, a lecturer at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, has passed away at the age of 67 after a brief hospitalisation. 

Born in 1956, Antonius (Ton) H. Borchert was a distinguished educator and professional, boasting extensive academic qualifications and experience in marketing, education and business. 

Dr Borchert's career spanned several roles and institutions, including the Hogeschool Utrecht, Maastricht School of Management, Karel de Grote University of Applied Sciences and the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Beyond these roles, he embarked on a scholarly adventure, delivering captivating guest lectures and engaging in collaborative projects at universities and business schools throughout various European countries. His influence extended into the world of literature, where he authored notable educational publications. Among the highlights of his illustrious career was his work on the book, 'Principes van Marketing' ('Principles of Marketing'), which he adapted for the Dutch market. 

In 2013, Dr Borchert briefly taught at WUAS to substitute for another lecturer, re-joining the team later in September 2022 to teach Marketing Management in the master's programmes.
