https://www.wittenborg.eu/students-february-intake-21-countries.htm

Almost 60 new students from 21 different countries joined Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences this month for the start of the semester. A significant number, more than 30%, are master's students, doing an MBA or a Master in Business Management (MBM).

Before starting classes, most of the new students joined Wittenborg's 2-day Introduction Week activities, where they get a crash course in academic life at the institution along with some tips on living in the Netherlands.

Seven of the new students will study at Wittenborg's Amsterdam campus in the capital city, doing MBAs in different specialisations, or IBAs in Entrepreneurship and SME Management, or IBAs in Entrepreneurship & Small Business.

The new students are from Egypt, Russia, Iran, Nigeria, Canada, Zimbabwe, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Malawi, Cameroon, China, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Uganda, Peru and Libya.

One of them is Adeola Fatekun from Nigeria. She will do her MBM in Enterpreneurship and Innovation. Her dream is to bring back the knowledge and skills she will learn from Wittenborg and put it all into practice in her home country.

Want to Build an App? You Can. Even Without IT Knowledge, AI Expert Tells Students

https://www.wittenborg.eu/students-learn-about-applying-ai-efficiently-business.htm

Artificial intelligence expert, Dr Larry Lucardie, captivated students this week by cutting through the complexity which many people associate AI with, and showing how it can be applied efficiently in business. He even demonstrated how anyone can build an app without IT knowledge or a programmer.

Lucardie, who is the CEO of Knowledge Values, was the guest speaker at the kick-off meeting for Block 5 Project Week at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, which revolves around artificial intelligence. Lucardie's company has delivered AI to many companies, banks, municipalities and other government agencies.

He started off his lecture by acknowledging that, though AI is developing fast, for most people it remains a mystery. "So far AI has not delivered much for companies. The current economy and organisations struggle with complexity, as knowledge and complexity are closely related. There is complexity in the business value chain and complexity is caused by complex customers. AI can help to make things less complex."

He cautioned that a pre-requisite is that the day-to-day realities in companies are sometimes not taken into account when building systems and processes. "If we don't understand reality, we can't make good systems. A lot of IT people don't understand reality and, therefore, can't build a smart system. For instance, exceptions cannot be automated." He used as an example the penguin - which is a bird, but cannot fly. "It is an exception. I see a lot of penguins when I visit companies.

The Challenges and Opportunities of Educating the Next Generation

https://www.wittenborg.eu/opinion-future-now.htm

“We’re just sad kids, who put all of our hope in the fact that putting our headphones in makes us feel we’re not alone.” (Anon. n.d.)

That statement hit home; it resonated a deep truth about growing up today. However, it tantalisingly holds an inherent solution to the same. The children and the teenagers are the future, now; they are a solution, in the making, today!

Recently, this writer, together with Peter Birdsall, a director of WUAS, were judges to a speaking competition at a high school in Epe. The topic was the title of this article. What made a strong impression was the opportunity for the students to express, and for us to hear, what lay at the core of their concerns. This is important -- no, this is vital -- in terms of true education for the next generation, for those who will eventually slip into the various roles of our society. They, the kids and teenagers, are the solution.

The old paradigm of separateness and no consequences for actions, and those who rigidly cling to it, is fading away in time. However, the consequences of decisions and actions taken from that older paradigm – nothing is connected, and, for example, if the Amazon forest is gone, so what? – are with us today, big time! This can best be summed up by the action of one Greta Thunberg, a now globally recognised young Swedish environmentalist. This young girl, a meaningful symbol for a new generation that needs a hero that they can relate to, is nevertheless criticised in certain elements of society as being too young, and/or autistic and so forth. As in many instances, the simple truth is missed: it is not Greta, it is the ideas expressed! Do those in charge listen to the message, or just see a young girl?

Graduates from 20 Countries at Wittenborg's 2020 Winter Graduation Ceremony

https://www.wittenborg.eu/wittenborg-graduates-given-final-boost-they-step-job-market.htm

As Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences' latest graduates stepped off the stage and into the labour market on Friday, degrees conferred, they were given a final moral boost in terms of their employability.

"You are a special category that employers are interested in," the keynote speaker at Wittenborg's 2020 Winter Graduation Ceremony, Rijn Platteel, told graduates. Platteel is the  regional chair of VNO-NCW, the largest employer organisation in the Netherlands. "You have international backgrounds and have already mastered intercultural relationships. These are skills I value more than your grade list."

He urged graduates not to value themselves only in terms of their degrees, but to look at the sum total of who they are. "We tend to see intelligence as only verbal, mathematical and spatial. Yet there are far more forms of intelligence. Musical, physical, interpersonal and intrapersonal. You are made up of so much more than just what you’ve read in books, what you’ve learned in formal education. Knowledge comes from real life, from applying knowledge in every part of your life. Knowledge is not only in your heads: you ingrained knowledge in your bodies. Knowledge comes from experience, it comes with living life.

Tips for Newcomers to the Netherlands

How to Be Smart with Healthcare and Housing in the Netherlands

https://www.wittenborg.eu/tips-newcomers-netherlands.htm

New to the Netherlands? Well, welcome aboard.  Read up to find out some additional tips on how to better settle down in the Netherlands, and particularly in Apeldoorn.  These are useful tips based on my own experiences and that of my friends.

Are you thinking of moving out of the accommodation provided by Wittenborg?  If you are, my advice is, start searching early.  It’s not easy to rent a room or a flat at low price.  Even if there is, it might be a little bit far from Wittenborg campuses, so you might have to take a bus or train – which, by the way, can add to your transportation costs.  Frankly speaking, transportation cost is quite high in the Netherlands and students don’t even get discounted fares.  So, choose wisely the area of your new accommodation.

Rental Allowance

If you’ve already got your own rental flat, congratulations.  But do you know that you can get rental allowance from the tax department?  Yes, that’s right, you can get your money back. The Dutch government helps starters, students and people with low income with a monthly rent allowance.  Not many people know that international students can apply for rent allowance.  I didn’t know either, until I read about it somewhere in the internet and I called the department to inquire more about it.  The Dutch tax authorities website published a list of conditions that one must comply with before being granted the rent allowance.

This month saw 2,800 exhibitors descend upon Munich at the largest trade fair for sport business, the 50th annual ISPO Fair. Held from 26 – 29 January, the world’s most innovative, successful and well-known sporting brands presented their latest products at the event.

Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences’ partner institution in Munich, the New European College (NEC), also had a key role at the event. NEC’s chancellor, Sascha Liebhardt, hosted the ISPO Brandnew Awards Ceremony and Pitch Competition on the opening day.

ISPO Brandnew is known as the largest platform for sport start-ups worldwide. For 20 years, ISPO has used ISPO Brandnew to seek out the most promising newcomers and innovators within the sports industry. Past winners of the Brandnew Award include GoPro, Naish Kites, Maloja and Nixon.

Liebhardt’s connection with ISPO started in 2012 when he was asked to be a member of the jury for the communication award. “Eventually I became the head of the jury and hosted a communication, storytelling and social media event at ISPO. This year I had the honour of being the host of the Brandnew Category Award Ceremony and the Brandnew Overall Category Competition and Ceremony,” Liebhardt said. He is the founder of NEC, which is dedicated to the education and future success of young entrepreneurs.

The competition commenced with the election of winners from eight Brandnew categories: Body & Mind, Connected Sports, Future Mobility, Matchtime, Offshore, Outdoor Adventure, Parks & Slopes and Urban Outdoor.

Update Corona Virus for Students and Staff at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences (02022020)

Update Corona Virus for Students and Staff at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences (02022020)Introduction by Peter Birdsall, President of Wittenborg

Wittenborg is taking the current concerns about the Novel Corona Virus extremely seriously and wishes to ensure all its students and staff that it is monitoring the situation on a day-to-day, and if necessary on an hour-to-hour basis. There is a focus on China, at this moment. This may change.

Of our 1000 students, approximately 10% are Chinese and as is custom every year some students return home to their families in China for Lunar New year. 2020 was no exception and Wittenborg has students who are currently in China, some are returning back to the Netherlands, others are not able to do so, due to restrictions.

Wittenborg is taking all possible measures to gain contact with all its Chinese students and support them where possible. Moral support is extremely necessary, as this Coronavirus is not a 'Chinese problem' however a global risk and global problem.

China is however currently confronted with the task of controlling the outbreak. This may change, if other countries develop outbreaks, and it is important for us to always keep in perspective that when it comes to illness, disease and health, these are a responsibility for all nations and all mankind, and it is our duty to support each-other.

Many students and staff at Wittenborg will be worried about the well being of loved ones, parents, grandparents and other family members. Let us be shining examples of good global citizens and give our support where needed.

Finally, I would like to warn against so-called 'fake news' please refer to the official Dutch sites of the ministries, the BBC News website or app, and for latest official figures: this site

Opinion: The Value of Business Statistics for Students

Opinion: The Value of Business Statistics for Students

https://www.wittenborg.eu/opinion-value-business-statistics-students.htm

Data analysis is becoming a ubiquitous (widespread) phenomenon in the business world and as future business graduates, it is pertinent that you pick up this subject and pick it up well.  It is also one of the vital components in your Graduation Assignment as it will help you to analyse and interpret your data in your findings.  So, if you think you don’t have to master it, or if you think you can ignore this subject, you are unfortunately wrong.

So, what is Business Statistics?

As most of us know, statistics is concerned with collecting, analysing, presenting and interpreting data.  With advancements in technology and the digitalization of many aspects of our lives today, anybody can have access to vast amounts of statistical information.  More and more business leaders and owners realize the significance of the ability to use data to their organization’s advantage.

Companies that collect data like Google or Amazon, translate online data into useful information that can garner them huge amounts of money.  It is no wonder then, the top four largest brand and richest companies in 2019 are tech companies with Apple leading the way, Google comes next and followed by Amazon and Microsoft.

Statistical data provides useful information.  Businesses should envision to entrench statistics in its strategy in order to succeed.  Decisions should be made based on factual information supported by appropriate data and its variations.  Statistical data are important in every department, not just in accounting.  It helps in marketing, finance, logistics, production and even human resource management.
