Students at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences can look forward to an excellent line-up of guest lectures in the coming academic year. After almost two years of COVID-19 restrictions, classes at universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands are expected to return to normal from 30 August with lecturers teaching in person.
According to Fjorentina Muco, Wittenborg's Guest Lecturing Coordinator, there will be at least 5 guest lectures from various disciplines in the first study block. Since the pandemic reached the Netherlands in March 2020, there has been online and hybrid teaching with most of the guest lectures delivered online.
“With online teaching, lecturers were concerned that some of the impact would be lost on students. On the upside, thanks to online teaching, we were able to recruit inspiring guest lecturers from many different countries, like Spain and Italy, who might otherwise not have been able to travel to the Netherlands to speak to students face-to-face. So online teaching opened that door for us.”

This summer, the research team at Wittenborg Amsterdam executed a pilot programme involving a series of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) activities as a supplement to an existing homework support programme in Amsterdam Zuidoost. The research team is headed by Senior Lecturer Amy Abdou and includes senior lecturer Dr Dadi Chen and MBA student Joy Eshun.
STEAM incorporates teamwork and collaboration to facilitate the creation of a product or object based on the understanding of a scientific concept. The researchers decided to test the effect of STEAM activities in the pilot programme on the participating pupils’ beliefs, perceptions and ambitions toward science and technology.
This current research constitutes a form of action research in which researchers by means of an interactive process of data collection, consultation and action try to implement a solution. The research is inspired by similar collaborations in the US where afterschool programmes work collaboratively with universities, private companies and governmental agencies to improve on their existing programmes.

Studying at an international school like Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences allows students to meet people from many different countries and build memorable friendships. This is the case of Irene Vieira, from Greece, and Salma Sierra, from Mexico, who met back in 2019, and this summer they had the opportunity to visit each other’s countries and learn more about their cultures.
Irene Vieira is 22 years old, and is half Greek, half Portuguese, but was born and grew up in Luxembourg. Having a multicultural background gave Irene the chance to speak fluent Greek, Portuguese and French. Moreover, she learnt English and Spanish. Currently, she is in the final year of her bachelor's degree studies in MCI Marketing & Communication.
Salma Sierra, also 22, comes from Mexico City, Mexico, and joined Wittenborg in February 2019 to start her bachelor's studies in IBA Economics & Management. Currently, she is in Phase 3 – the last year - of the study programme and expects to graduate at the beginning of 2022.

Wittenborg’s Professional Field Panel was officially rolled out in an MS Teams meeting on 18th June. The purpose of setting up this panel is to bring together Wittenborg’s faculty, business practitioners and working graduates (alumni) to ensure that Wittenborg’s programmes are in line with the industry’s requirements and market trends.
The panel is made up of two members of the Advisory Board, Wittenborg's two Heads of Schools and five alumni. The two members of the Advisory Board are Rijn Platteel and Wim Oonk. Platteel has been appointed Chair of the Panel. The decision to include alumni on this panel is to ensure that Wittenborg can take advantage from the experiences the alumni bring to the new developments and changes, as they have experienced the programme planning, delivery and the final outcome of the programmes offered at Wittenborg.

There will be no social distancing in Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences when the new academic year starts this autumn. This announcement was made by the Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, on Friday at a press conference which also anticipates more COVID-19 restrictions lifted later in September.
Classes in the Netherlands are set to start on 30 August. There will however be a maximum limit of 75 students per class and outside of classes in hallways people are expected to wear a face mask. Universities must ensure there are good ventilation inside and general hygiene like washing hands must be observed.
Rutte said the decision was made because more than a million students in the Netherlands have had to make do with improvised education the past year and a half and that it had serious implications not only for their academic progress but also their mental health.

Not only was the Netherlands the best-performing EU-country at this year’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but Apeldoorn – the Dutch city where Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences is located – can lay claim to a high number of medals. In the final medal table, the Netherlands is ranked 7th in the world – beating France, Germany and Italy in the Top 10.
Of the whopping 36 medals won by Dutch athletes at the Olympics, 7 of those are coming to Apeldoorn. In other words, 20%. Yes, we did the maths. No wonder the Dutch daily, De Stentor, reported “it’s raining medals in Apeldoorn”.
All 7 medals were won by four cyclists: Harrie Lavreysen (2 golds, 1 bronze), Jeffrey Hoogland (1 gold, 1 silver), Roy van den Berg (1 gold) and Shanne Braspennincx (1 gold).

The Future of Managing Diversity in Multinational Organisations

A new study sheds light on the work values of Generation Z – those born after 1995 – who are often considered the first truly global generation and expected to account for more than a quarter of the global workforce in the next few years. The study surveyed almost 1,200 undergraduates from the Netherlands, China, Germany and Thailand – most of them business students (82%).
According to the researchers, the results of the study underscore the importance of managing diversity in multinational organisations and of having a thorough understanding of value differences among the multinational workforce. “The results of this exploratory study show that nationality serves as a key differentiator in terms of Gen Z work value preferences and desirability. This suggests that a uniform corporate approach to managing global HR and work design is ill advised. Attention should be paid to accommodating differences on the work floor in order to ensure long-term Gen Z employee engagement and retention.”

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, a new term emerged: “staycation”. Widely used in the tourism sector in the Netherlands, staycation refers to travelling within your national borders and encouraging people to explore the country they live in. Ha Yen Quynh, an MBA International Management student, has taken staycation to a whole new level.
Hà Yến Quỳnh comes from the city of Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam. She is 27 years old and is currently in the thesis phase of her postgraduate studies (MBA) in International Management. She expects to graduate at the end of 2021 and hopes to stay in the Netherlands after completing her degree.
When she arrived at Wittenborg, it was her first time in the Netherlands and also her first time leaving Vietnam for such a long period. She felt motivated by recommendations from friends about the country, the English proficiency of the Dutch and the convenient location in the continent when it comes to connections with other countries. Passionate about travelling, she packed her luggage and came to what is for her the nicest country in Europe.
