On 1 October, a new version of the Code of Conduct for International Students in Dutch Higher Education will be published, after the conclusion of a revision process that took nearly two years. Implemented in 2006, the Code of Conduct is an instrument of self-regulation aimed at ensuring that Dutch higher education institutions provide international students with proper assistance and information. Moreover, it also establishes English-language requirements for international students who want to pursue their education in the Netherlands.
The document is a joint initiative of the Dutch government and the country’s higher education institutions, represented by the three umbrella organisations pertaining to the segments of research universities (Universiteiten van Nederland), universities of applied sciences (Vereniging Hogescholen) and private education institutions (NRTO).

Although Yingping Li had worked for several years in the field of logistics while living in China, she felt the need to expand her knowledge and experience of an educational system that was completely different from the one she was familiar with. For this reason, Li decided to quit her job and move to the Netherlands to study for a bachelor’s degree in Logistics & International Trade at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences.
Having completed her programme in November 2021, she explains that she chose Wittenborg for various reasons. “At the time I made my decision, the COVID-19 pandemic was a serious issue, and because of the lockdowns and travel restrictions I felt I had to take action immediately because otherwise I would not be able to leave China. Wittenborg’s flexible entry dates were convenient, and I was also attracted by the fact that the school is a very international environment. Plus, I had discovered, by reading some articles, that the school’s CEO Maggie Feng is Chinese, and I found that really interesting.”

Public universities lax with applying for visas for students from 'risk countries'.
Last week the Dutch newspaper NRC reported on a problem faced by public universities of applied sciences regarding the recruitment of international students requiring a visa.
Importantly, it should be pointed out that the Dutch often refer to the 100,000+ ‘international students’ as one group, whilst around 75% of these are students from the European Union, mainly Germany, studying at Dutch universities for the same low tuition fee as Dutch students (fully funded by the Dutch taxpayer). Only 25% of international students are from outside the European Union and generally require a study visa, which in the Netherlands is arranged via the ‘modern immigration act’ for knowledge migrants, which lays responsibility for the document collection, checks and balances with the university.

In order to provide students with guidelines and tips on how to dress for specific occasions and activities, as well as help prepare them for the social expectations related to their future careers, Wittenborg has adopted a clothing etiquette with effect from the new academic year 2022-2023. With this, the school intends to help students develop good work ethics, given that clothing is also a means of communication. Wittenborg’s faculty members gathered for the first time since the summer vacation to kick-off the start of the new academic year 2022-2023. The half-day meeting was held on Tuesday, 23rd August 2022 at Wittenborg’s Spoorstraat campus in Apeldoorn and streamed online for faculty members who were not able to attend in person or who were outside the country. During the meeting, President of Wittenborg, Peter Birdsall gave an overview of Wittenborg’s upcoming activities as well as the challenges ahead. Highlights for the coming year include the Opening of Brinklaan 268 campus & BBQ on 26th August, EuroCHRIE Conference in October and Wittenborg's 35th-year Gala Celebration in November.

“We meet here today to celebrate what is soon to become a part of Apeldoorn's emerging modern identity," said Deputy Mayor Jeroen Joon during his speech.
On Friday, August 26, Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences hosted its Annual BBQ for staff and students. However, last Friday's occasion was unique to previous Wittenborg BBQs. This year, the event commemorated the opening of the Brinklaan building. All in attendance – including Deputy Mayor of Apeldoorn, Jeroen Joon – were treated to complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and a BBQ cooked up by Wittenborg staff members.
"We have been supported by many, many businesses, by the city government and by our friends... Everyone has chipped in, has made this possible. We're really grateful. This is a new chapter for Wittenborg," said CEO Maggie Feng during the BBQ.
Wittenborg was thoroughly privileged to host members of the surrounding Apeldoorn community, who seemed to enjoy getting to know the Wittenborg family.
The event opened with a speech delivered by Deputy Mayor Joon about Wittenborg and Appeldorn's future with one another.

For Block 1 of Wittenborg's 2022 academic year, the school is embracing more diversity with regards to scenery and student body. This year saw Wittenborg's Spoorstraat location undergo a facelift operation, an exit from the Aventus building and move into the Brinklaan building, in addition to an influx of more students from increasingly diverse locations.
At the Amsterdam campus, Support Office Administrator Xiaoli Wu expressed her excitement at the new Wittenborg students. "I'm always happy to see these new passionate faces and always have faith in them that they will excel in their studies here at Wittenborg, and make themselves and us proud with their best efforts and results!".

Team Building Activities
With Block 1 of the Wittenborg calendar year about to begin, office staff and directors alike are giving their all to provide a proper welcome to new and returning students. Part of that is making sure student housing – namely the De Ruyterstraat accommodation – is up to scratch.
Wittenborg President Peter Birdsall and CEO Maggie Feng place great importance on making the De Ruyterstraat accommodation more comfortable for residents.
So, on the Monday of Introduction Week, 22 August, different members of Wittenborg's office staff voluntarily donated one working hour to cleaning the student building.
Armed with hoovers, mops, sponges and cleaning fluid, staff entered the facility and got to work. The atmosphere was jovial, with everyone smiling and helping each other throughout the unconventional team-building activity.
