Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences (WUAS) advisory board member Johan Kruithof (1952) has a long history of serving Apeldoorn, both as a politician for the Dutch social democratic party and as a private citizen.

As a member of the PvdA, the social democratic party of the Netherlands, he served as a member of the city council from 2002 to 2012 and as an alderman1 from 2012 to 2018. Having been a student during his time as an alderman, I witnessed first-hand the role he played in making sure that the city of Apeldoorn recognises the value that WUAS and its students add to the community. It made me proud to vote for him during the 2019 elections for the regional water authorities (waterschappen).

Professor of Applied Sciences Dr Teun Wolters will no longer be teaching at Wittenborg from September 2021, but his presence at Wittenborg will not end there. He is now busy promoting HOST Apeldoorn, a Pastoral Care programme for international students, whether from Wittenborg or any other universities/universities of applied sciences.

Studying abroad may be the zeitgeist of today, but it is not without its problems. Whether it is difficulties adapting to the cultural norms in the new country, keeping up with the rules and regulations, missing family or simply making new friends, many international students experience challenges in coping with their new lives.

The best way to mitigate these away-from-home effects and other potential problems is to get support from current students or to get in touch with an organisation that can help them with their challenges and to facilitate them to assimilate better into their new environment.

Climate Change: Wittenborg's Theme for Academic Year 2021-2022

Thematic Academic Year

From the Academic Year 2021-2022 onwards, Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences is pioneering an innovative initiative - that is, to have a thematic academic year. This means that for every year, for the next ten years, Wittenborg envisages having a single theme connected to its curriculum, teaching and learning and university-wide activities. This is an initiative to heed the United Nations’ call to be more involved in the dissemination of current knowledge to youngsters and make them more aware of the local, regional and global contexts in which they live, and to equip them with the skills to make ethical choices or apply systems-thinking approaches to serious societal problems. Both faculty and students will be involved in deciding what the theme for the next academic year will be, as they are the main stakeholders in the Wittenborg community.

This year, the theme Climate Change has been chosen by its President, Peter Birdsall, and supported by the Executive Management and its Education Board team. Climate Change was chosen to coincide with the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland from 31st October to 12th November. This event, which many believe to be the world’s best last chance to get “runaway climate change under control”, will be presided by the UK in partnership with Italy.

The 'Study and Life Experience Sharing Session' held online by Wittenborg's Amsterdam campus proved to be a fruitful and rewarding event for new students. The session, hosted by Senior Lecturer Dr Dadi Chen, was to help new students fit in the Wittenborg family sooner and better. The 'speakers' invited were current EBA students Luuk Ornstein and Lilly Seijffert, master's students Milad Goudarzi (MBA) and Kejsi Hoxha (MBM), and MBA graduate Gauhar Kassymbek.

Joy of Returning to 'Almost Typical' Academic Year

This year, the number of students physically attending classes was higher compared to the start of the previous academic year. However, some students still opt to join lessons online thanks to the hybrid policy and the decision made by Wittenborg not to eliminate the use of online tools completely, such as Moodle and MS Teams. Students and staff attending in person can be seen wearing masks in all public and common areas.

“It is good to be in touch again with the joy of my job,” says lecturer Andreas Ooijer referring to the experience of the first physical session with his students at the Wittenborg premises in Amsterdam after a period of one year.

In 2015, Wittenborg embarked upon a sustainable development journey in terms of mapping, learning and teaching activities and infusing aspects of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its curriculum. Recognising that it has a critical role to play in the attainment of the SDGs, Wittenborg aims to implement not only sustainability, but also climate change in its core operations for the academic year 2021-2022 and also to encourage its students and staff to ‘walk the talk’.

The United Nations 17 SDGs are an urgent call for all countries, whether developed or developing, to ensure peace and prosperity for people and the planet. The main aim of the SDGs is to mobilise efforts, on a global scale, to end poverty and other deprivations, reduce inequalities, improve health and education and tackle climate change.

A warm welcome to all our new and returning current students from around the world! Whichever programme you are studying, or starting, one of the pathways and specialisations of the Bachelor of Business Administration, an MBA -Master of Business Administration specialisation, or one of the Master of Science MBM programmes, we want to empower you to get the very most out of your studies.

We are starting this new academic year, in 2021, after having experienced a period of disruption, angst, and lockdown across the world caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. By now it is clear that we will (globally) be living with the effects of the coronavirus for some time to come, however due to the vaccination programme here, we see that the Netherlands, along with much of Europe is 'getting back to normal' and preparing to 'put up with covid’.

Wittenborg Warmly Welcomes New Students from 21 Different Countries from Around World

One of Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences’ unique and attractive features, compared to other European universities, is its 6 entry dates for all degrees. This means that students who are interested to pursue their degrees at Wittenborg can apply in February, March, May, August, October and November every year.

With the start of the new academic year, Wittenborg warmly welcomes 58 new students upon the first intake: 48 in Apeldoorn and 10 in Amsterdam. These 58 newcomers represent 21 different countries and nationalities. Specifically there are thirteen Iranians, twelve Nigerians, four each from India and Spain, three from China, two each from Turkey, Russia, Rwanda, Poland, Zimbabwe, Vietnam, and one each from Bangladesh, America, the Philippines, South Africa, Kenya, South Korea, Japan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Pakistan and the Netherlands.

Online Teaching Widened Pool of Guest Lecturers from Around World

Students at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences can look forward to an excellent line-up of guest lectures in the coming academic year. After almost two years of COVID-19 restrictions, classes at universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands are expected to return to normal from 30 August with lecturers teaching in person. 

According to Fjorentina Muco, Wittenborg's Guest Lecturing Coordinator, there will be at least 5 guest lectures from various disciplines in the first study block. Since the pandemic reached the Netherlands in March 2020, there has been online and hybrid teaching with most of the guest lectures delivered online.  

“With online teaching, lecturers were concerned that some of the impact would be lost on students. On the upside, thanks to online teaching, we were able to recruit inspiring guest lecturers from many different countries, like Spain and Italy, who might otherwise not have been able to travel to the Netherlands to speak to students face-to-face. So online teaching opened that door for us.”

This summer, the research team at Wittenborg Amsterdam executed a pilot programme involving a series of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) activities as a supplement to an existing homework support programme in Amsterdam Zuidoost. The research team is headed by Senior Lecturer Amy Abdou and includes senior lecturer Dr Dadi Chen and MBA student Joy Eshun.

STEAM incorporates teamwork and collaboration to facilitate the creation of a product or object based on the understanding of a scientific concept. The researchers decided to test the effect of STEAM activities in the pilot programme on the participating pupils’ beliefs, perceptions and ambitions toward science and technology.

This current research constitutes a form of action research in which researchers by means of an interactive process of data collection, consultation and action try to implement a solution. The research is inspired by similar collaborations in the US where afterschool programmes work collaboratively with universities, private companies and governmental agencies to improve on their existing programmes.
