As the Halloween party decorations are stored away and the crisp autumn air settles in, November in Amsterdam promises a vibrant array of cultural events and festivities for students and staff at Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences. Here's a rundown of the exciting happenings in the city:

Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences' CEO, Maggie Feng, recently attended a meeting hosted by board members of the Regio Stedendriehoek to discuss pressing labour market challenges facing both the region of Apeldoorn, Deventer and Zutphen, as well as the broader Netherlands.

On 19 September, Feng joined thought leaders and other experts at a pivotal gathering in Zutphen, which coincided with Prinsjesdag, the Dutch national budget day.

According to data supplied by the employee insurance agency of the Netherlands, UVW, the country is currently grappling with a labour market crisis, with persistent staff shortages across various sectors, including information technology. These shortages have led to a surge in workload for existing employees and a decline in production capacity for many businesses. This scarcity of human resources has also translated into challenges in essential areas such as healthcare, public safety and education.

One of Wittenborg’s most fun (and spookiest!) events is back after four years. On the evening of 26 October, more than 100 students and staff members gathered at Teun Apeldoorn to participate in the school’s Halloween party, which had last taken place in 2019 before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to enjoying free drinks and snacks, attendees had the opportunity to take to the floor and dance to music of multiple styles – including songs that helped create the simultaneously eerie and exciting atmosphere of the event. Moreover, students seized the chance to socialise, make new friends and express their creativity through their costumes.

The school also held a party at the Waterhole in Amsterdam on 27 October, which was attended by around 30 students and featured live music with a line-up of various popular music genres.

During the activity, Baghuis shared her extensive knowledge on sustainability and governance, addressing topics such as the fact that European Union law requires stock-exchange-listed and large companies to report on their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. Later, there was a networking session in which participants could connect and exchange information.

Earlier this month, a high-profile delegation from Wittenborg, comprising of President Peter Birdsall, CEO Maggie Feng, and Head of Executive Affairs Myra Qiu, embarked on a transformative journey through China, fortifying old relationships and cultivating new partnerships across four major cities and nine esteemed universities.

Two of the institutions visited, boasting a decade-long collaborative history with Wittenborg, were reminiscent of the longstanding international bonds the university cherishes. Meanwhile, the delegation was thrilled to engage with new partners, some of whom had already had a taste of Wittenborg’s innovative education during prior visits to the Apeldoorn campus, as well as new academic establishments keen to join hands for future endeavours.

Shanghai

The first leg of the trip saw Birdsall and Qui in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, where they engaged in strategic dialogues with representatives from Shanghai Business School and Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance – both long-term partners of Wittenborg. They also visited Shanghai Second Polytechnic University and the private institution, Shanghai Sanda University, laying down the groundwork for prospective collaborations. (Many thanks to Mrs Feng Ai, executive of Chinese HR recruitment giant BOSS Zhipin for helping arrange the partnerships in Shanghai)

By participating in EAIE Rotterdam – one of the world’s most important events in the field of higher education – Wittenborg has gained valuable insights and solidified its position as the most international business school in the Netherlands. The 33rd European Association for International Education (EAIE) Conference and Exhibition took place between 26 and 29 September, with the theme 'Connecting Currents', being attended by thousands of academics, professionals and scholars from all over the world.

EAIE 2023’s programme featured a great variety of activities including workshops, presentations, networking events, panels and guided visits to the campuses of higher education institutions. One of the highlights for Wittenborg was the beautiful stand set up by the school in the Exhibition Area. In addition to increasing the institution’s visibility and further building brand awareness, this was also a way to promote team bonding between Wittenborg’s representatives as well as networking opportunities.

Assignment Focused on the Famed Allianz Arena and FC Bayern Museum

https://www.wittenborg.eu/munich-students-visit-one-europes-most-iconic-stadiums-during-project-week.htm

As part of the ‘September block’ project week, bachelor’s and master’s students of Wittenborg’s Munich study location had the unique opportunity to explore the Allianz Arena. This famed stadium is home to the legendary FC Bayern Munich – one of the world's most successful football clubs with 30 Bundesliga titles and 6 UEFA Champions League titles to its name.

The overall goal of the project, conducted between 18 and 22 September, was to help students develop an understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in marketing iconic venues, using the Allianz Arena and the FC Bayern Museum as primary case studies. To do so, the participants were divided in teams of up to five members and required to deliver a series of products, including group reports, presentations and self-evaluations.

Among other tasks, they had to develop a comprehensive document capturing current marketing strategies of the Allianz Arena and the FC Bayern Museum, supplemented with a SWOT analysis, as well as an innovative marketing strategy addressing specific challenges faced by the venues. The assignment also included the creation of a proposal detailing the integration of digital tools for enhanced audience engagement.

My ultimate goal is to gain substantial experience in the field, working on international platforms. This is an opportunity I never had in Iran, where data science and data analytics are not widely available. There, these skills are often self-taught or acquired by students who have studied abroad and returned. I'm attracted to the idea of analysing business data to create new products or services, as well as to attract customers. I find it fascinating,” says Armita Nazari, one of almost 90 new students treated to Wittenborg's Introduction Week activities from 16 to 19 October.

Nazari, who will be studying for an MBA degree in Data Analytics, is one of 22 students who joined Wittenborg’s Amsterdam study location this week. In addition to the Dutch capital, 46 new members of the Wittenborg family will be pursuing their programmes at the school’s main study location in Apeldoorn and 19 will be based in Munich.

Conducted from 18 to 22 September, the activity involved almost 140 bachelor’s students from three programmes: Hospitality Business Administration (HBA), International Business Administration (IBA) and Marketing, Communication and Information (MCI).

During the project week, participants were required to come up with a strategic marketing plan to promote the museum and increase its brand awareness abroad, making it look diverse and attractive to the international market. To do so, the participants were divided in groups consisting of between four and six students.

Alexandra Kukhtina Goes through New Challenges and Rewarding Experiences at Camp Jewell YMCA

https://www.wittenborg.eu/iba-bachelor-student-spends-summer-horse-riding-instructor-usa.htm

Over the course of last summer, IBA Bachelor student Alexandra Kukhtina, specialising in Economics & Management, had the chance to undergo a completely new experience by working as a counsellor and horse-riding instructor at Camp Jewell YMCA in Connecticut, USA.

As the end of the school year approached, Alexandra had been searching for work opportunities abroad, thinking of ways to spend her vacation. While doing so, she began following many social media profiles that advertised temporary vacancies, which eventually led her to an Instagram post about summer camp jobs in the United States. After reading more about it, she created a profile on a recruitment agency’s platform and was soon contacted by Camp Jewell – a popular sleepaway equestrian camp for children – and subsequently accepted their proposal.

The student highlights that, even though she had started camping when she was 10, and had attended various summer camps in Russia, Spain and Turkey, this was the first time she had worked as a counsellor.
