This October, Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences continued its international engagements with a visit to Türkiye, represented by Deputy Student Registrar Sinan Colasan and Admissions Administrator Amin Nadervandi.

The duo attended the a2 International Education Fairs that took place from 7 to 11 October in Istanbul. This event presented a significant opportunity for Nadervandi and Colasan, much like the previous fairs held in Türkiye.

During the event, a2 Fairs brought together more than 7,000 students and over 100 international schools, with Wittenborg being the only educational institution from the Netherlands to participate.

Shedding light on the event's significance, Nadervandi said that many representatives from different institutions come together in Türkiye every year to showcase their institutions' information, such as brochures and international student application details.

"This means that prospective international students have the chance to interact with us face-to-face and learn more about our range of academic programmes."

Amsterdam has emerged as a top-tier destination for job seekers across Europe, according to a recent study. The study, conducted by HR software company SenseHR, delves into the job markets of major European cities, ranking them based on job posting-to-job seeker ratios using data from Glassdoor's job postings and Statista's unemployment rates as of July 2023.

This analysis takes into account not only the number of job postings but also factors like average salary and cost of living, providing a holistic view of the employment landscape.

Challenging job markets across Europe

The report's findings reveal some of the toughest European cities for job seekers. Spain's Madrid tops the list, with 14 job seekers competing for every available position. It is closely followed by cities such as Helsinki, Rome, Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Dublin and Paris, all presenting significant challenges for those seeking employment opportunities.

An innovative and sophisticated initiative aimed at attracting and retaining international talent in the Brainport region of the Netherlands was officially launched on 7 November at Brainport Eindhoven. Wittenborg CEO Maggie Feng had the opportunity to attend the launch, together with other seasoned professionals of the education and business sectors, as well as government representatives and entrepreneurs. 

Titled ‘Regional Vision on International Talent’, the strategic plan is focused on developing a solid regional vision that enables stakeholders from multiple sectors to join forces and tackle the challenges regarding internationalisation. The strategy is primarily targeted to the attraction and retention of IT and tech professionals at all levels, from vocational to PhD. It consists of four main stakeholder groups: governments, educational institutions, employers and internationals themselves.

On 12 October, Wittenborg participated in the second event promoted by Workmode in collaboration with the Municipality of Apeldoorn. This time, the dynamic meeting was held with the theme ‘Noticing Chances’ and featured two seasoned speakers: entrepreneur Carlijn Plujmakers Emmen and business consultant Jolanda ter Maten.

While Emmen spoke about her many companies, how she started and how she takes bold steps without being led by fear, ter Maten discussed the changes brought about by AI and their potential impacts on our work, both positive and negative.

Meeting Gathered More than 120 Professionals and Featured Inspiring Activities and Discussions

In a dynamic intersection of academia and industry, Wittenborg CEO Maggie Feng actively participated in the Brainport event held on 1 November in Eindhoven. Titled ‘Education & Business Collaboration’, the meeting drew attention to the crucial link between education and the business sector, exploring innovative ways to enhance collaboration.

The Brainport Industries Campus, where the event took place, served as a vibrant backdrop for the gathering. Established in 2019, it is an innovation, business and education-focused hub that currently counts more than 50 companies, 2,000 students and 2,000 dedicated employees.

The primary focus of the meeting was on strengthening ties between educational institutions and companies, addressing challenges and fostering sustainable relationships. Over 120 education professionals attended the activity, joined by industry leaders and government representatives.

Feng commented that collaboration between the education sector and the industry is high on the agenda for both sectors.

From 13-17 November 2023, Wittenborg’s Research Centre and EDQM (Education Development and Quality Management) department alongside other members of the "Enhancement of internal quality assurance of education in teaching, learning and assessment in higher education institutions of Azerbaijan and Russia'' (IQAinAR) project consortium from the Netherlands (456 International BV) and Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, Nakchivan State University, Azerbaijan Technical University and the National Agency on Quality Assurance in Higher Education) will participate in a study visit to Murcia, Spain. This study visit will be hosted by Spanish project partner Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio (UCAM) and will focus on IQA policy, indicators and practices developed at an institutional level.

On the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, Wittenborg had the honour of hosting the Turkish Consul General of Deventer, Muammer Hakan Cengiz, at its campus in Apeldoorn. The event, attended by students and staff on 24 October, was a momentous occasion that celebrated Türkiye's rich history, culture and its evolving role in the global landscape. 
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Peter Birdsall, President of Wittenborg. Birdsall greeted Consul General Cengiz and expressed his admiration for the diplomatic representation in Deventer. In his opening address, Birdsall acknowledged the historic significance of the day, highlighting the recent decision by the United Nations to officially adopt "Türkiye" as the English-language name for the nation.
